When Canadians think of surfing, most likely envision a tropical coastline far from their own backyard. But surfing is alive and well in Canada, even, perhaps surprisingly, in Ontario.
A video recently filmed on the shores of Lake Huron in Kincardine, a town in Bruce County, shows a group of wetsuited surfers taking advantage of an autumn storm to ride some huge 8 foot waves.
Bianca Wong, who captured the scene and posted it to YouTube, wrote on Facebook that she “wanted to share it with the folks that were actually crazy enough to ride those waves.”
This fall the third annual West Shore Huron Classic surfing competition will be held in Kincardine, where the water drops from shallow to deep very quickly, and strong northwest winds help to create some of Ontario’s best surfing conditions.
