Onlookers were delighted this week when nearly 50 orcas appeared in Active Pass off of B.C.'s Galiano Island. The two pods—one of which was the famous J pod—were filmed swimming by a BC Ferries boat.
Gary Cullen, who captured the display from the shore, told CBC News that the whales appeared to be enjoying themselves, slapping their flukes against the water's surface. At one point a youngster can be seen jumping from the water.
"It was a pretty social party they were having," Cullen said.
Galiano Island lays between Vancouver Island and B.C's lower mainland. It is the driest and most undeveloped of the major Gulf Islands.
