Last week, there were media reports that the world experienced the fourth warmest January. This may have surprised many in North America, where even the Gulf of Mexico and Florida experienced unseasonably chilly winter weather.

This video from NASA’s Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) shows temperatures at one kilometre above sea level from early December to the first week of January. As the polar vortex creeps from its normal winter position near the North Pole to regions farther south, other areas of the world appear toasty.
