Over the course of the more than 80 years of Canadian Geographic’s history, maps have been a valued and devilishly effective storytelling tool. From the first wildlife-migration maps in the 1930s and Second World War-era maps depicting the South Pacific theatre of battle right up to modern-day online interactive maps, cartography is one of the pillars on which this magazine is built.
To commemorate this eight-decade legacy of making maps, this online exhibit was developed by Canadian Geographic in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Canada featuring 53 memorable and revealing cartographic gems that have appeared on the magazine’s pages and website.
As a selection of maps from this exhibit shows, cartography can definitely pack a punch.
