The beauty of putting a bear on the cover of Canadian Geographic is that it’s virtually guaranteed to perform well at the newsstand — our covers with bears typically sell better than most other subjects. So our cover vote (held each issue to solicit feedback from our followers and help us choose the cover) for the April 2016 issue was particularly interesting as our team was split on a favourite among the four decidedly different bear options vying for the coveted position.
But the tally, as it often does, delivered a decisive winner, particularly helpful to us when our team is divided over the best option. Option two, a grizzly peeking out of the water, scored victory with 43 per cent of the vote (options one, three and four garnered 11, 36 and 9 per cent). Voters generally commented that they were drawn to the simplicity both of the image and the cover line treatment — coincidentally, both keys to successful cover design.
A clear winner in such cases makes our decision very simple. Why argue with an overwhelming reaction from the audience when there’s no compelling reason to — and when you’re dealing with a cover subject that seemingly can’t miss anyway?
