Canada may have only walked away with one Oscar at last night’s Academy Awards — Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy snagged the award for best short documentary for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness — but the country played a major role in the best picture category, with four of the eight nominated films having been shot north of the 49th parallel.
Room was completely filmed in Toronto, while Brooklyn was partially filmed in Montreal, where part of the city was made to look like 1950’s-era Brooklyn. The Revenant was primarily shot in British Columbia and Alberta. Among the film’s locations were the wilds of Kananaskis Country, west of Calgary, and around Squamish, B.C., where the film’s jaw-dropping bear-attack scene was shot.
And last but not least, best picture winner Spotlight was mainly filmed in Toronto and Hamilton. In both cities, streets were transformed to look like the parts of Boston where the events the film is based on took place.
