West Montana is bookended by two of the nation’s finest gems: Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Which aptly explains why exhilaration is the universal language in our corner of the world. Here you’ll find raging geysers and free-roaming herds of bison. Craggy alpine peaks and glacier-fed backcountry lakes. All set in a wild land roamed by grizzlies, wolves and friendly locals alike.

Which is why you may want to consider passing up our speedy four-lane interstates in favor of the laidback nature of Montana’s two-lanes. You’ll also have a better chance to get acquainted with our small towns where locals stop for pedestrians, give a knowing nod and a two-finger wave from the steering wheel as you pass. Here you’ll discover huckleberry pancakes and kitschy postcards. And it’s here that you’ll find a stopover in-between all that exploring, hiking and fishing. But that’s not to say that stopovers shouldn’t come with warm coffee and a hot tub to relax in. Hotels in Montana run the gamut from quaint and historical to local six-room lodgings and national chains. Whichever you choose you’ll find a couple things common to all—plenty of spectacular landscapes and unexpected quirks in-between.

And, well, the unexpected can take on many forms here. Like the Beartooth Highway where snowball fights occur well into July. Pulling over in Yellowstone to hang out with wolf-watchers who will likely invite you to take a look at young pups playing in the sagebrush. Or, maybe even attending the National Folk Festival in Butte where travelers celebrate unique music, culture and cuisine among the town’s historic backdrop.

All told, a trip to Montana is perfect for those interested in unexpected surprises in a place that has more than its fair share of them.
