Nelson Springs, Alberta

Nelson Springs, Alberta
Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton, is home to more than 30 annual music, arts and cultural festivals with an option for every enthusiast. Whether you’re a foodie, sculpture lover or drama buff, Edmonton offers year-round events and festivals not to be missed.

Bring the family and experience Edmonton’s Capital EX (July 17-26), one of the country’s largest exhibitions with daily performances, games, fireworks, parades and shows for all ages. Capital EX attracts more than 800,000 visitors to the city’s Northlands Park complex, just to the northwest of Edmonton's downtown district, and this annual summer fair is a perfect opportunity to let loose.

Drawing world-class performers, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (Aug. 6-9) showcases the best celtic, bluegrass, blues, gospel, roots and singer/songwriters and takes place outdoors in downtown Gallagher Park. The festival, paired with some local cuisine and a picnic blanket, makes for the ultimate summer evening of enjoyment with family or friends.

Get dramatic at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival (Aug. 13-23) and choose between 1,200 shows and performances from 207 companies in 27 venues. Established as the first fringe festival in North America in 1982, it’s also the continent’s largest and performances feature every form of art and entertainment (juggling anyone?) for festival-goers to enjoy. Edmonton’s Old Strathcona neighborhood lends its many permanent theatres (Walterdale Playhouse, Transalta Arts Barns, Varscona Theatre, Catalyst Theatre) as well as converts other venues into temporary theatres to host Edmonton Fringe events.

Or head to the Canadian Finals Rodeo (Nov. 11-15) and watch real cowboys wrestle snorting steers into the mud, rope lightning-fast calves and hold on for life atop buckin’ broncs. The CFR has been held in Edmonton every year since 1974 and offers one of the richest purses in Canadian rodeo.

Alberta offers a plethora of year-round festivals and events. Visit www.GoCanadianRockies.com to plan your visit.
