The Amazing Campus Chase
Where orientation meets orienteering
By Tracy C. Read

Forget painting yourself purple. Forget suffering freshman humiliations at the hands of upperclassmen. Part road rally, part obstacle course, part adventure race and part reality show, the Campus Chase series is pushing the town-and-gown connection into overdrive. In this campus welcome, it’s all about seizing the power, tapping into your inner strengths and making the connections that will get you from here to there. Just like life.

A spin-off of City Chase (launched in 2003 and now dubbed “The World’s Largest Urban Adventure Series”), Campus Chase aims to introduce students to one another — and to their environment. Events have been planned across the country as students return to campuses, and on October 22, the Chase hits the streets of Ottawa.

On chase day, participating teams of two (at least one member must be a registered student or a faculty member)) will be issued race numbers, T-shirts and a ChasePoint Clue Sheet. The teams have four hours to negotiate the City of Ottawa on foot or by public transportation (boys, leave that skateboard at home). The challenge: using city maps, teamwork, imagination, native intelligence, the Internet and the advice of friends (by all means, bring your cell), find and win as many of the 15 to 20 ChasePoint Challenges scattered across the city as you can.

The exact nature of the challenges is kept secret until the race packages are distributed, but organizers stipulate they could involve such activities as cheerleader training, waiter races at the campus bar, passing a G2 driving test or a photo/video hunt using the latest Smartphone technology (it should come as no surprise that BlackBerry is the series sponsor).

And yes, there will be an after-party.
