ABOUT THE IPY ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 2007

The Students on Ice – International Polar Year (IPY) Antarctic Expedition 2007 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for youth around the world to explore and experience the wonders of Antarctica. The expedition will serve as a powerful platform to create change, inspire, educate, and raise awareness about the impacts of Climate Change and other environmental issues facing the region today.

The group will meet prior to the expedition for preparatory study and research as part of the educational program. On December 25, 2007, the team will board their flight and fly to Miami, USA, where you will meet other students joining the expedition team. Together, the team will board an overnight flight to Ushuaia, Argentina and the expedition will be well on its way. After a good nights sleep, you will set sail across Drake’s passage to Antarctica; with 24 hours daylight in the Antarctic, you can take full advantage of your days there. During the voyage, you will learn from world-renowned polar educators that will lead seminars and lectures that are focused on many topics related to history, geography, flora, fauna, and current environmental concerns facing the Antarctic today. There will be daily zodiac cruises where you will make landings along the coast line to see wildlife settings, scientific bases, and historic sites.

The expedition will involve youth from around the world, as well as a team of international polar and environmental experts and scientists. The expedition is an excellent all-round introduction to the science, environment, culture, wildlife and breathtaking vistas of the Canadian Antarctic.

“Visiting Antarctica has impacted us emotionally, artistically and intellectually. As future leaders with a new global perspective, we now feel a responsibility to express our insights. Feelings and concerns about this continent.”
— students from past expeditions

Every day on board the vessel will be different than the last. The expedition weaves together elements of exciting shore landings, interpretive hikes, community visits, zodiac cruises, and ship-based exploration. The education program also includes lectures, workshops, naturalist seminars, and small group discussion. Students will also have time for personal reflection, such as time alone on deck to soak up some of the most spectacular scenery on Earth.

While the expedition is underway, participants will communicate their experiences to the world through a special expedition website, pod casting and video conferencing technology. Students and educators will post daily log updates and photos.

This expedition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for participating youth to expand their knowledge about the circumpolar world, and to gain a new global perspective of our planet, its wonders, and its present and future challenges.
