MOSAIC
Rainbow connection
You could hardly swing a dreadlock without hitting
a bohemian brother or sister at the Rainbow Gathering in
the forests of Quebec last August. Four to five hundred
people congregated near the border of La Vérendrye Wildlife
Reserve, about 350 kilometres north of Ottawa, in what has
become a global tradition since the first such gathering in
Colorado in 1972. Borne out of an effort to keep the 1960s
hippie movement alive, participants celebrate peace and healing
in a natural setting, where cooperation and shared responsibility
for food and shelter are guiding principles. In Quebec, they
assemble for a month every summer, usually between full moons,
and come from as far away as Europe and Mexico.
"In this phase of my life, Rainbow is important to me," says
Sister Andrea. "It is a family of
the freest folks, living close to the elements and working together
to create paradise."
—Jodi Di Menna
