Gumboot gourmets
Excerpt and photography by Margo Pfeiff

A salty sea breeze mingles with the aroma of warm crab tartlets and duck confit as diners graze with plate, linen napkin and wineglass in hand. Attire is gumboot casual, better for strolling the grass of the historic Woodside Farm in Sooke, B.C., 45 minutes west of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley. The occasion is southern Vancouver Island’s Feast of Fields, a harvest celebration held each September on a different farm. The festival draws sold-out crowds and brings together foodies (above), chefs such as David Nolan and Michael Pelletier, and producers from among the island’s 3,000 farms.
