Nature’s symphony
The clicks, clacks and buzzes of grasshoppers in flight are as much a part
of summer as lemonade and holiday picnics. Nature recording enthusiast Doug Von
Gausig kindly made these sound files available to our website for your pleasure.
This
is the sound made when a beautiful red-winged grasshopper (Arphia pseudonietana)
with flashy red wings, takes flight. It clicks loudly like this as it flies,
sometimes for 10-15 seconds at a time.

Pallid-winged grasshoppers (Trimerotropis pallidipennis) are common
summer grasshoppers. They’re small, brown and tan mottled grasshoppers. This
is the sound of their flight, which you will probably find familiar.
