MOSAIC
Prized catch
Photography and story by Dan Doucette
On a glacier-scraped island off the coast
of Nain, N.L., Miriam Jararuse runs her knife
through an Arctic char, cutting flesh from bone,
then reaches skyward and hangs the fillets on an improvised
wooden rack to dry in the sun. At the water’s edge, Miriam’s
husband Tom and their adult son Jeffrey are also cleaning
char, a relative of trout and salmon, just as their Inuit forefathers
had done for generations. If it weren’t for the motorboat
and modern clothing, I could easily believe that time itself has
forgotten this wild land and that I’m witnessing a scene from
centuries past.
