Gordon Lightfoot’s “Christian
Island (Georgian Bay)” is as
close as we sailors in Georgian Bay have to a local anthem: Tall
and strong she slips along / I sing for her a song / And she
leans into the wind / She’s a good old boat and she’ll
stay afloat
/ Through the toughest gales and keep smilin’ / When the
summer ends we will rest again / In the lee of Christian Island.

Having lived in Montréal for three years, “Montreal” by Blue Rodeo
always brings back wonderful memories of the years my wife and I spent in that vibrant
city: Those were the times / That was our life / I probably wouldn’t change / One
little thing if I tried.
Keith Brown
There is a line at the end The Weakerthans’ “This Is a Fire Door Never Leave
Open” that makes me think of the prairies every time I hear it: And I love this place;
the enormous sky / And the faces, hands that I’m haunted by, / So why can’t
I forgive these buildings / These frameworks labeled “Home”?
Darcy Cornelisse
“My Home Is a Rome” by The Uncas is an ode to Edmonton. I live in Asia, and
this song has become the soundtrack to the last leg of my yearly journeys back home: My
home is a Rome on the Prairie / She shines so bright, late at night / I can feel her all
the way from Calgary / The screamin’ trains, E-ville pains and me.
James Stuart
“Cape St. Mary’s” and “The Cliffs of Baccalieu” bring up
many emotions in me, even when played instrumentally. As a Newfoundlander who lived away
for many years, I know the importance of songs to keep one connected to his or her true
home. And it was a concert by Great Big Sea in Victoria that finally inspired me to move
back home again! I am home for good now.

Gary Fjellgaard is a resident of Gabriola Island, B.C. His song “Islanders” (cowritten
by Timothy Dean) has become the island’s anthem: Islanders Islanders right to the
bone / How could we wander so far from our home / With our true love beside us / We are
kissed by the sea / Islanders we’ll always be.
