Our lady of the lake
Story and Photography by Susan Fisher

Long before Catholic missionaries arrived here in 1843, Cree gathered at Lac Ste. Anne each summer to hunt buffalo and called these sacred waters Manito Sakahigan, meaning "Spirit Lake." Today, the lake, 72 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, is the site of an annual pilgrimage of more than 40,000 people who, for one week in July, transform a stretch of shoreline into a lively community crowded with tipis, campers and tents that offers everything from spiritual healing to bannock burgers.
