All fires in Saskatchewan's full-response zone (below, left) are suppressed. In the modified-response zone, fires are assessed and action is taken if they can be extinguished in two days. After that, they are monitored until favourable weather allows them to be contained cost-effectively. More than two million hectares burned across Canada in 2002 (below, right).
