Jodi Di Menna
Ottawa-based Jodi Di Menna, who specializes in writing about natural history and has worked for Canadian Geographic and the Canadian Wildlife Federation, was a geologist — briefly — before heading to journalism school. “Talking to Natalia Rybczynski about her breakthrough fossil discovery brought back memories of my paleontology courses,” she says. “It’s easy to glamourize the work of field scientists when you’re talking to them about the amazing things they have found. But they don’t often mention the days they found nothing at all, the wind that whipped their notes into a bog, the soaker they got trying to get to a promising outcrop, not to mention the meticulous planning, the reams of data and the long hours in the lab. I’m satisfied writing about the amazing finds of others.”
