Welcome to Canada’s agricultural city
On Ottawa’s sesquicentennial, we at Canadian Geographic decided to take a look at what makes
this Canada’s top city – agriculturally. Ottawa (map) has the largest
agricultural economy of any major city in Canada. But what does this mean for
its residents? Do Ottawans cherish their connection to cultivation and take advantage
of the area’s rural farms that cater to the increasingly urban market? Does the city protect
and reserve its precious urban acreage for community gardens?
In "Canada’s agricultural city," we celebrate the past and present of
Ottawa’s rural farms through a service-oriented story that focuses on
agri-tourism in the Valley. We also explore how we can improve the future of city
green spaces with an OpEd on community gardens and a treatise of an urban farmer.
Join us as we ramble from the Hill to the dale in this special
online feature.
