To find ways to manage water supply, University of Regina sociologist Harry Diaz is heading a five-year study comparing conditions in Canada’s South Saskatchewan River basin to Chile’s Coquimbo water basin. He hopes to use conditions in Chile as a model to forecast the impact of climate change on the Canadian Prairies.

 


Canadians could soon be looking at the origins of the universe after the completion of a telescope in Chile in 2011 that will allow scientists to study the birth of galaxies. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array radio telescope is being built with help from the National Research Council of Canada’s Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics.

 

A new Baha’i temple designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects of Toronto is being built in Santiago. Due for completion in 2008, the temple features nine spiralling alabaster “leaves” that overlook a large reflecting lily pool and nine prayer gardens. There are 18 Canadians on the design and construction team.
