we move away from the influence of Lake Huron. At Whitefish the two-lane highway begins, with massive cuts through rocks of the Southern Province.

In 1883, near Sudbury, a blacksmith named Tom Flanagan noticed some stained mineral rock while working on the new CPR line; it was copper. The discovery led to the development of the biggest nickel-copper mining complex in the world, the area now known worldwide as the Sudbury Structure and one of the largest known meteoritic-impact structures on Earth. You have a chance to explore within this great crater and to look for signs of the impact.
