Technical Questions

How is the "digital" version different than the regular print version?

The Digital Version is an exact digital replica of the print version, but it offers you many additional advantages, including:

  • Automatic delivery of every issue directly to your computer via the Internet, often days earlier than you would receive the print version by mail
  • Timesaving tools that quickly take you right to the articles, features, and sections that are most important to you
  • Quick hot links for easy navigation to content on the Web, advertisers' sites and other articles throughout the issue
  • Convenient features that allow you to search text, make highlights and annotations on articles, and zoom in on desired areas, and share your issue with friends or colleagues at no additional cost
  • Efficient, paperless storage of your archived issues on your PC for access at any time

Plus, you'll receive your digital version as soon as it's available — typically 2-3 days before you'd receive your issue in Canada via snail mail. For those outside Canada, you'll be able to access your issue 1-2 weeks earlier than what you are used to.

Does the digital version contain everything in the print version: articles, photos, advertising?
Yes, it's exactly the same. You won't miss a single article, photo, map or ad.

What is the digital format?
We've partnered with a company called Zinio to create a convenient, new digital format that features the same great content and the same great design delivered straight to your desktop over the Internet.

What application do I use to read the magazine in digital format?
The Digital Version requires software that was developed by Zinio and is FREE for our readers. When your first digital issue is ready, you'll receive an e-mail notification along with instructions on registering with Zinio and installing the FREE Zinio Reader software.

Will the FREE Zinio Reader work on my computer?
The Zinio Reader works on both PC and Macintosh computers. The Zinio Reader works in Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP. A Pentium II 233 or better is recommended. The Macintosh version requires OS X 10.1 or higher. A G3 or better is recommended. For the most current system requirements, click to: http://www.zinio.com/reqs?os=win.

Of course! You can read your digital issues both at work and at home plus on your notebook by using your unique Zinio account. You can read your digital issues on more than one PC once you install the Zinio Reader and simply download the magazines again. Then, you'll have convenient access to your digital issues anywhere.

If the magazine is in digital format, does that mean I can do a keyword search for a topic?
Yes, you can. You can search for a word or set of words that appear in the text of a magazine, making it easier to find that article you remember reading last month.

Can I mark up my digital magazines the way I do with the print version?
The Zinio Reader has highlight and note features that mimic the way we use print magazines. Highlight key passages that you want to return to, or jot yourself a reminder about a product of interest that you want to research, or an event you want to attend.

How much disk space does the Zinio Reader use?
When you download the Reader, the file size is approximately 7MB.

How much disk space does a typical issue take up?

Subscription Related Questions

Is a subscription to the digital version more expensive than the print version?
No, a subscription to the digital version costs less than a subscription to the print version. Because there is no additional postage, we can pass those savings on to you. American and International subscribers save shipping costs and pay the same low price as Canadian subscribers.

Print subscription: $28.50 CAD plus applicable taxes and additional shipping $8 US or $20 International
Digital subscription: $24.50 CAD plus applicable taxes, no additional shipping

What if I am already a subscriber to the print version? Can I convert my subscription to the digital version?
Yes, your print subscription can be converted to a digital-only subscription at the time your subscription comes up for renewal. A key reason for creating a digital version of Canadian Geographic magazine is to give our subscribers the option to receive a digital-only subscription for both environmental and convenience reasons. Once the digital edition is available in October 2011, the option will appear on your account summary under the renewal section and on your renewal notices.

Can I switch back from the digital version to the print version if I want to?
Yes, a subscriber can switch a digital-only subscription back to print. It is most convenient to do so at the time of renewal as there is a slight additional cost for delivery of the print edition, however, our customer care staff will be happy to make individual arrangements based on the number of remaining issues in the subscription. You may call us at 1-800-267-0824 (within Canada and the U.S.) or canadiangeographic@cdsglobal.ca to make your request at any time. Be sure to provide your account number or the exact name and address as it appears on your address label.

Will I be able to share this digital version with friends, family and colleagues? Can I copy articles or photos and e-mail them?
Yes. You can send them your issue or you can send them a link where they can download their own copy. The Zinio Reader has a “Send to Friend” feature that lets you invite friends, family or colleagues to download their own free copy of your magazines. You can even send your notes and highlights to your friend. However, you can't copy articles and photos in the reader application.

Do I need to subscribe for a whole year, or can I just buy a single issue as I do on the newsstand?
You'll save money by subscribing. But if you prefer to buy a single copy, you can do so at www.zinio.com

Will digital archives be available? If so, will there be a charge to access the archives?
We have developed a 5 year back issue archive that is offered as a free bonus to all subscribers to Canadian Geographic. Plus, each issue you receive when you start your digital subscription is stored on your hard drive for easy access and archiving. Back issues beyond what is available at http://www.zinio.com are not currently available in digital format.

Is there a limit on the number of times I can download and/or access the information in the digital version?
You may download each issue up to three times. Once on your computer, you may continue to read each issue as many times and for as long as you like.
