Even though the First Nations people were in Canada first, it is believed that they have not always been here. Scientists think they came across on a bridge of ice that connected Siberia and North America almost 14,000 years ago!

There were many different First Nations groups in Canada. Each had their own culture and ways of making decisions. Instead of having a government, they relied on unwritten customs, codes-of-conduct, village councils and families. But when European explorers arrived in 1492, the lives of First Nations peoples and the history of Canada changed forever.
