Our objective is to make our school yard more biodiverse. We are looking to transform our front yard into a biodiverse outdoor classroom. To that end, within their science class and as a Green Team club, we are making and placing bird feeders (from recycled materials) to attract the widest range of wintering birds. We are making scientific observations about feeder types, feed, species visiting and consumption rate. We are learning about the birds, their food and habits. In spring, we will turn our attention to making birdhouses. We are researching natural, flora (herbaceaous and woody)that reflect the Carolinian type of forest and will be planting local plants to attract a maximum range of local birds and small animals. We would also like to do the same for the back strip of the playing field. Students are having a fundraiser - rummage sale - before St. Valentine's to raise money for bird feed and the purchase of plants. We are in the process of bringing recycling into the whole school. We hope to get a red worm compost going by late spring.

Greetings,

My name is Alex Ratkovic, and I would like to tell you about my classes efforts towards greener living. We found that at our school, J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School, an exceeding amount of paper is wasted. People are throwing blank pieces of paper into the recycling bin!
We’ve decided to set up a bin that people can deposit their half used paper into, so someone else can make use of it. We’ve also decided that for practice work or material we won’t use again we can use dry-erase boards instead of paper. We turn off half of our lights when we work, we turn off the computers when we’re not using them, we unplugged our electric pencil sharpener, and might even begin a compost heap.
Instead of using pieces of paper as late slips, we are encouraging our secretaries to call our teacher or send an e-mail informing them that one of us is late.
We have been recycling paper, metal and plastic for quite a long time, but if one piece of paper is with the plastic and metal or vice versa, the landfill site will not take the entire load of recycling (which was produced the whole school) and must go into the garbage section.
We think that by doing many small actions, we can add up and make a big difference, and even though we might be just one class in a school, in a single province of Canada, we are making the world greener.

To whom it may concern,

These past couple of days my class from J. Douglas. Hodgson .E.S has been talking about what to do to go green. So these are the ideas that we decided on … to save energy we have decided to turn off one set of lights when we are in the class room and to try not to for get to turn them all off when we leave the room, to save paper we are going to use dry erase boards when we don’t have to hand it in like if we are practicing math questions or brainstorming, at lunch when we have milk cartons instead of not recycling them because they have milk in the bottom we are rinsing them out and throwing them in the paper recycle, also to conserve energy we turn off the computers when we are not using them, a compost pile is another thing that we are doing, we used to have an electric pencil sharpener but now we have unplugged it , and last we have a bin with paper in it that has only been used on one side so we can use the other side to brainstorm on. And that is how my class is going green!!!

To Whom It May Concern,

I am Brooke Reid, and I attend J. Douglas Hodgson Elementary School. Our class has been recently talking a lot about saving our environment. We have talked about the things we could do, and have decided amongst our class a few things to try. One thing we have been doing recently is turning off our computers when they are not in use, and turning off half our lights since we have 2 sets of lights. We are also going to buy a white board, and a couple of markers to scribble on, brainstorm, etc. because it helps the environment because it doesn’t waste paper because that we just recycle. Our class before we decided to go green, we had a electric pencil sharpener, so we have unplugged that so it reduces power, so we have a regular hand held pencil sharpener. For the use of recycling, our class has been starting compost in our class and one of our students will take it home to his larger compost and then gets placed in the compost at the dump, and also we are rinsing out our milk cartons and recycling them. At J. Douglas Hodgson we have been wasting a lot of paper, so we are trying to get our principal to reduce the fact of needing late slips, for when you arrive at school later. For that fact they could either page our teacher to let us know, or use e-mail. Thank-you.

Sincerely,
Brooke Reid

In our class room we are doing a lot of things to help the environment. We have started turning off one of the lights while in the class room to save energy. We also turn off all the lights when no one is in the classroom. We have been shutting off our computers when they are not in use, only turning them on to use and then shutting them off as soon as we’re done. We don’t want to pollute our planet any more then we already do.

At our school we also have a milk program, so we are now rinsing our milk cartons and recycling them so that they can be recycled and used again to make other things like paper. We have recycling monitors in our class. They take the recycling to the big bins outside once a week and also make sure that nothing else is mixed in with the recyclable materials. Because if there are other garbage items in our big recycling bins outside then the county landfill site won’t take it and all of that goes into the landfill which wastes our limited space.

We have also decided to get white boards and dry erase markers/a bin for scrap paper to brainstorm or just to draw. We have decided to give away our electric pencil sharpener. I think that my school is doing an excellent job at turning environmentally friendly, and really trying to save the planet.

Dear Green Challenge,

My class is taking part in this contest and I’ve decided to send a letter to you telling you what our class is doing to help the environment. Firstly, we are using both sides of paper so that fewer trees have to be cut down and less money has to be made to buy the paper. Also, we have started a compost heap. We’ll have a bucket that we’ll put uneaten food into. One kid in our class will take it home to a compost heap. As well, we are using half or no lights in our classroom while we are inside.
We are turning off computers while we aren’t using them. It turns out; sleep mode uses as much power as when you keep it on! The milk cartons we drink are washed and recycled. Also, we are trying to use wipe boards to cut down on paper usage. They are good for brainstorms!
Another thing we are doing is giving used books to the library. That way, they don’t have to buy new books. Well, that is basically what we are doing. I hop that our class wins.

Sincerely,
Alex Kocot

It is now 2008 and my class 7/8 F is becoming environmental friendly. We are using half the energy than usual and reducing half the garbage. We reduce garbage by rinsing out the milk cartons so we can now put them into the paper recycling and we have rotating jobs to look through the paper and plastic recycling bins so that only the right specific materials go into each bin. Another thing that we are now starting is compost. One of the students in our class will be taking the compost, every day after school, to his house to get it dumped out then brought right back the next morning so we won’t have flies buzzing around our heads while we are working. By only keeping one light on when we are in the class room and always making sure the light is off when we are not in the room we are saving tons of energy. Our class is also keeping the computers off instead of just logging off when not in use. We are using signs on the front of the computer like “You turn me on but you should really turn me off”. More ways that we are becoming environmental friendly is that we are going to be getting those dry erase boards instead of wasting paper for just one or two things, like brainstorming, doodling, and practice problems for math. Our class is excited about being able to help our community and world to becoming a beautiful, efficient, and better place.

Yours Sincerely,
Kirsty Cook

Our project is a school-wide waste reduction and recycling program. Our class in particular strives to bring litterless and boomerang lunches to school on a daily basis. Each class in the school is responsible for using the recycling bins appropriately as well as the garbage bins. Every bin in the school is checked and monitored daily for proper usage in order to reduce waste school-wide. At the end of each month, the class to best use the bins properly and reduce waste, receives a pizza lunch as further incentive.

We believe that our continued efforts to reduce waste at Altona Forest will contribute to preserving our environment.
