Canadians toss out more than 140,000 tonnes of computer equipment, phones, television, stereos and home appliances every year, most of which contain hidden toxins like cadmium and mercury. It's a number Environment Canada says will triple in volume in the next five years. Waste Diversion Ontario wants to impose a levy on consumers to help pay for the safe recycling and disposal of obsolete electronics.
