Tyrone Burke took this shot of a green jay using Nikon’s new 70-200 mm lens.

For wildlife photography pros shooting Nikon, the company’s 70-200 mm, F2.8 lens has long been an essential part of the kit. In my work as a Canadian Geographic editor, I’ve often admired the crispness and saturation that our photographers are able to produce with this lens, and its range of focal lengths is just about perfect for shooting wildlife at relatively close range.

The catch: a whopping $2,399 price tag.

Whatever the weather photo contest

Congratulations to the winners of the Whatever the Weather photo contest!

Photographer J. David Andrews, the Weather Network's John Gallant and Canadian Geographic photo editor Laura Stanley had the difficult job of selecting the winning photos from more than 14,600 submissions.

The judges chose the winning weather shots based on composition, content/originality, technical quality and visual impact. Watch the video above to hear why the winning photos stood out for them.

Canadian Geographic and the Canadian Museum of Nature are pleased to announce the winners of the Wildlife Photography of the Year competition.

With five new categories that focus on relationships in nature, such as the connections between predator and prey, the winning photos capture decisive moments in the natural world.
