When I travel, I never keep all of my valuables in one place, and I often feel a bit cartoonish as I divide my cards and cash among numerous inserts, pouches, wallets and pockets. Last fall, my frustration came to a boiling point. I was monitoring the Ukrainian election, and I had to carry large amounts of cash so I could pay my interpreter and driver. I didn’t like the options I had, and got pretty freaked out about carrying what amounted to a year’s worth of wages for most locals with me for over a week.

If you want to tackle a multi-day hike in Canada, you’ll be carrying in food, a camp stove and cleaning supplies on top of clothing, tents and sleeping bags. No one loves our national parks’ scenery more than I do, but all that gear can weigh you down, and if you’re walking with kids, you end up carrying even more weight. So when I decided to tackle a week’s worth of walking with a seven year old in tow, I opted not for BC’s West Coast Trail or New Brunswick’s Fundy Circuit, but for Scotland’s Fife ...

For wildlife photography pros shooting Nikon, the company’s 70-200 mm, F2.8 lens has long been an essential part of the kit. In my work as a Canadian Geographic editor, I’ve often admired the crispness and saturation that our photographers are able to produce with this lens, and its range of focal lengths is just about perfect for shooting wildlife at relatively close range.
The catch: a whopping $2,399 price tag.
