This mapping tool requires flash, and presents a map of Canada which allows you to use numerous tools to customize and view a map of Canada which provides street level detail for all of Canada. Click here to use the map.
The main tools and functionality available for use with the map are explained below.
The zoom controls You can zoom in and out of any part of the map. When you first enter the mapping tool, it defaults to a bird’s eye view of Canada at a scale of 1 to 7.5 million. You can zoom in as closely as 1 to 250,000. You can see the scale of the zoom view just below the map, listed in kilometres. One centimetre on the map is equal to the displayed distance in the real world. You can change the scale by clicking and dragging the slider. Dragging the slider to the left decreases the scale and dragging it to the right increases the scale. Zoom in : There are two ways to zoom into a map using this tool. 1) Select the Zoom in feature by clicking on the Zoom in icon (picture of icon here). Then, move your mouse to the location where you wish to view in more detail and click the left mouse button. The map will reload, centering and zooming in on the location you have chosen. 2) Click on the Zoom in icon, then click and drag a box around the area you wish to view. Define the box by dragging from the top left corner to the bottom right. The smaller the box area, the closer the map will zoom to your selection. Zoom out : To zoom out of a map, click on the Zoom out button and then click on the map. The map will then reload, centering and zooming out on the location you have chosen.
Move tool : To move the map, select the Move icon, then click and drag the map. Release the mouse button to reload the map with the boundaries you have defined. To move the map over a long distance, it may be useful to zoom out of the map before clicking and dragging (or, use the Map Navigator, mentioned below). Measure tool : The Measure tool allows you to measure the distance between two or more points. Select the Measure icon, align the circle in the Measure tool with the point of origin on the map, and then click on that point to begin the measurement. Click on your destination to see the distance between the two points. You can continue clicking on other locations to see the combined length of a route. Note: the Measure tool calculates a straight-line distance between two points. To get a more accurate road distance, trace a road or a highway by plotting down curves along the route. Remove measurements by clicking on any map control button.
The Info tool The Info tool provides you with further information about the area you have selected. Select the Info icon and click on a location on the map. The Canadian Atlas Online will display any additional information relevant to that area in a pop-up window. To close the window, click on the Close icon (picture of X) on the window’s upper right corner. You can also choose to minimize the Map information window by clicking on the Minimize icon next to the close icon. E-mail : You can send the currently displayed map to any e-mail address. Click on the E-mail icon to open up the e-mail window. Enter your name, the recipient’s address, and a brief message (optional) in the appropriate boxes and click Submit to send. The e-mail contains a link with information about the map you have been viewing. The recipient of the e-mail can click on this link to see the map you have created. Please note, distance measurements are not included. To exit the e-mail window without sending a message, click on the X in the upper right corner.
