The goal
of this lesson is for students to evaluate the Canadian Navy’s participation in
world affairs and global conflicts.
By the
end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Conduct research from a secondary source of information;
·
Describe and explain the Canadian Navy’s role in various
conflicts/situations;
·
Form an opinion and defend it in a class discussion;
·
Assess the Canadian Navy’s participation in world affairs;
·
Develop a well-written paragraph.

Introduction
|
Provide
a brief history of the Canadian Navy and discuss the Canadian Navy’s
Centennial celebrations. (Use the Canadian
Geographic Navy Centennial Poster as a visual aid.) Play
the video clip from The Canadian Atlas Online – Navy Centennial entitled: ·
“Historic Vessels of the Navy” Discuss
the ships from the video and Inform
students that they will conduct research to assess the Canadian Navy’s
participation in global affairs in the past and present. Distribute
the student activity and review the instructions. |
Examine
the Canadian Geographic Navy
Centennial poster map and video clips that introduce the history of the
Canadian Navy. Participate
in the class discussion. |
Lesson Development
|
Monitor
and assist students as they complete the activity. They should be able to complete Section A
and B in one class. Begin
the second class by polling the results of Section B. Ask students to defend their rankings. Ask
students to begin working on their summary paragraph and collect it at the
end of the class. (Review paragraph writing skills if
required.) |

Students could research regional, national and global initiatives of the

Student Activity
What
role should the Canadian Navy play in modern conflicts and current world
affairs?
Before
you can answer that question you will need to gather facts about the role of
the Canadian Navy in the past, present and future. Use The Canadian Atlas Online to conduct your
research. After you have gathered the
facts, you will rank current global conflicts/situations in order of importance
and form an argument to defend your opinion.
Finally, you will write a brief summary paragraph evaluating the
Canadian Navy’s role in modern world affairs based on the information that you
have gathered.
