Imagine being shackled by chains and spikes for almost 50 years. The daily abuse suffered by elephant Raju is enough to bring any animal lover to tears.
But there's a happy ending for Raju. On July 4, a team from animal rescue organization Wildlife SOS carried out a midnight rescue to save the elephant in Allahabad, India.
In this week's video, a rescue worker takes the spikes off Raju's legs that had trapped him for decades. Finally released from his chains, Raju was free to walk around, though he still appeared thin and malnourished.
Photos from Wildlife SOS show that shortly after the rescue began, Raju was crying, presumably tears of joy at finally experiencing freedom.
