Most of the world’s best northern-lights-viewing locations are in Canada. In fact, this country boasts between 80 and 90 percent of all accessible land under the auroral oval — the area with the strongest geomagnetic activity and the brightest and most frequent displays of the aurora borealis.

As solar activity heats up this year, the auroral oval will expand to lower latitudes, making the northern lights visible farther south than usual.
