It is impossible to miss Liberia Marcuzzi’s plot at the entrance to the Strathcona Community Garden in East Vancouver. Marcuzzi, who was born near Venice, Italy, designed it to look like the gardens of Renaissance painter Botticelli. For the past five years, she has shared her passion with neophyte gardeners and curious visitors who come to Strathcona, which was founded in 1985 and is one of the oldest and largest community gardens in Vancouver, to experience the blossoming fellowship and cultural cross-pollination of the place. To promote the local production of food, the city launched an initiative in 2006 to open 2,010 new community garden plots by 2010, the year it hosts the Winter Olympics. About 1,300 plots have been counted so far.
